AMSTERDAM – Employers do not offer their workers enough room to improve their position within the organization. This became clear from research performed by Effectory , over 300,000 workers were interviewed.
57 percent of workers score their possibility to better their position with a unsatisfactory mark and the opportunity for promotion scored 4.9 on average. In addition, there is also too little focus on career development (5.6) and educational training (5.0). According to Effectory’s managing director, Guido Heezen, this is due to low budgets for staff training and promotion is often not in the equation at all.
Creative
According to Mr. Heezen, organizations do try to find creative ways of handling this situation. They incorporate social innovation, meaning that they ask staff to actively think of ways to improve the organization. This creates new possibilities without the bank being broken: ‘Workers will often come up with surprisingly effective and cheap ideas supporting their own development when being asked to assist’.
Ambition
The limited possibilities within organizations oppose the ambitions of workers who desire to grow within that organization. Interviewed workers said that they scored their desire to grow within the organization a 7.7. In business that score is even higher (7.9). According to Mr. Heezen this is especially due to the current economical situation. “In times of economical decline, workers are more willing to improve their current work situation. Many workers are glad to be able to hang on to their job and are willing to try to make the most of it.”
