As the economy is starting to pick up again, new staff must be recruited for jobs in the Netherlands. Companies would pay all sorts of extras get good staff, and to keep them interested in their company during the recruitment process. Think along the lines of an unlimited number of vacation days or a reduced fee for transporting your children to school.

"Dutch companies look to successful foreign companies such as Google when it comes to ways to recruit and retain good staff," says Noor Hendrikx in Metro. She is the Human Resources Manager at Tentoo, a business that handles the payroll for several companies. "Instead of offering higher salaries, companies look for nice fringe benefits in line with the private life of the employee."

The goodies that employers are using to entice new recruits for dutch employment can range from a reduced cost for designer clothing to a payment of bonuses to employees who do not smoke, even including an unlimited number of vacation days. This is not abuse, despite what it seems. It even appears that people with no limit on the number of vacation days actually take less days off than their colleagues who are attached to a certain number.

Good communication about these special extras is necessary, as it could generate tension between employees. Hendrikx: "It is important to properly explain how this came about in order to avoid tensions in the workplace. These "outsiders" in the team are sometimes necessary to bring in knowledge which is difficult to find."
