The combination of paid work and care for someone or appropriate childcare regularly leads to stress and health problems. School and day-care closing times are still insufficient with working hours, says the ESC. In recent years there has beentoo littledone to rectify the situation.
Elderly People Are Living at Home Longer
Caregivers who also have paid work often encounter problems, which will only get worse in the future. According to the government elderly people must continue to live at home longer and are increasingly dependent on their network when they need care. Appropriate arrangements for workers are not made, in order to be able to provide care to some older person as well. Not everyone is flexible about working from home and there is little known about the various leave arrangements, according to the advisory.
Employees are also expected to continue to learn. The combination of all tasks brings enrichment and it offers people more opportunities, but it also involves tensions. Many workers, including young people frequently feel rushed.
Burnout
About one in eight workers in the Netherlands suffer from burn-out symptoms. Flurry is a phenomenon that plays a role in various stages of life. The SER notes that the combination of paid work and more intensive care in certain situations is impossible. The percentage of workers that provides care has increased between 2004 and 2014 from 13% to 19%.
SER chairman Mariette Hamer: “We simultaneously perform more and more tasks and at a faster pace. For example, look at the overlap in private life and work. And together with work and care there is the continuous learning that has become a fixed component. This accumulation of tasks makes time a rare commodity. It is a shared responsibility between government, employers and employees to provide solutions for this”.
The Council believes that the current arrangements are still too strong for a standard employee and have too little sensitivity for diversity in society. We also have different needs during the various stages in our lives. Changes in culture and policies are needed.
