The Municipality of The Hague has updated its ‘social return policy’. The municipality aims to use this policy to help at least 2,400 people in the city find work between now and the beginning of 2018.

Under the social return policy, businesses working on behalf of the municipality help unemployed people to get a job or internship. Since the measure was introduced in 2007, more than 4,000 people have found work.

The updated measures provide more leeway for socially responsible enterprises and tailor-made businesses, explains Deputy Mayor Rabin Baldewsingh (Social Affairs and Employment). ‘With the social return policy we not only purchaase a product such as a road or a school building, but together with the businesses we provide work experience for people. This way a flat job market becomes more fluid and we work on extra employment opportunities for the people in our city.’

The policy falls under the  Participation Act, which took effect on 1 January 2015. Under the new act, 4,000 residents of The Hague with a limitation will get assistance finding work in the coming 10 years.
