The tourism sector is becoming increasingly important for the Dutch economy. For the second consecutive year, tourist spending in 2015 grew by about 5% from the previous year. The value of this tourist spending now reaches 72.7 billion EUR, reported CBS.
Last year, foreign tourists spent nearly 20 billion in the Netherlands, which is over 13% more than in the previous year. One of the reasons is that 8% more tourists came here. In addition, more foreign tourists’ accommodation and (airline) tickets were booked by or through a Dutch company. A large proportion of these tourists did not travel effectively to the Netherlands, but Dutch companies make it to these bookings.
In 2010, the tourism sector accounted for a value added (at basic prices) from 17.3 billion EUR. In 2015 it grew to 23.3 billion EUR, an increase of nearly 35%.As the tourism sector has grown faster than the rest of the economy, the share of the tourism sector in the gross domestic product increased from 3% in 2010 to 3.8% in 2015.
The number of jobs in the tourism sector has increased to 626 thousand by 3.5% in 2015. This equates to an increase of 21 thousand jobs. The number of people working in the tourism sector rose more than 3% last year. In total there were 529 thousand people employed in the tourism sector, which had together 377 thousand full-time jobs. That is 5.4% of the total number of full-time jobs in 2015.
About three quarters of work in the tourism sector consists of characteristic tourism jobs. These are jobs in the hospitality industry, aviation, agencies- and mediation, and in the arts and culture sector. About a quarter of the work in the tourism sector includes jobs in retail, public transport and the taxi industry.
