In 2014, one third of employees in the public service sector had to deal with violence and aggression. The government will continue efforts to reduce aggression and violence against public servants, as Minister Plasterk of the Interior stated.

While working in public tasks, suffering from aggression and violence is not just annoying for these employees. “It provides a significant cost for society,” says Plasterk.

Victims of aggression and violence are more prone to health problems, fail more often, and are less satisfied with their work and working conditions.

The healthcare sector is where most employees have to deal with aggression and violence. More than 45 percent of employees in this industry had to deeal with agression from other people in 2014.

The Inspectorate SZW notes that psychosocial workload, which also covers aggression and violence, is high on the agenda of issues to deal with. During inspections in 2014, the inspectorate found 79 percent of hospitals in violation in regards to their approach towards aggression and violence.

Campaign
The Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment launched the campaign “Be clear about workplace aggression.” Employers can make all kinds of campaign material and various tools can be used to make employees aware that aggression and violence in the workplace is unacceptable. For example, the website AgressievrijWerk.nl gives tips on how aggression and violence in the workplace can be prevented, by taking action such as establishing more rules on the working or safety of the workplace.
