EC investigates cross-border employee discrimination
Brussels will for instance investigate whether foreign employees pay more tax money than their native colleagues. Furthermore, it will be looked into whether or not employees from other member states may claim the same tax deductions. According to the commission, fiscal obstruction is still the main barrier in creating an internal market. “The EU regulations are quite clear: all EU citizens should be treated equal in the internal market’, according to Member of the European Commission for Anti-Fraud Algirdas Semeta.
Core Principles
‘Most of the member states honour these core principles. Should there, however, be member states whose tax regulations do not meet these principles, then I will be willing to do whatever possible in order to rectify the situation.’ In clear terms this means that should discrimination occur, then the commission will address the concerning national authorities. If the member state makes no changes, the European Commission may start an infringement procedure against this member state. The European Union holds approximately 1.2 million people working abroad.
