Not all employees are honest with their boss when it comes to applying for a new job with another employer. The vast majority, 70 percent, who hold a job prefer to keep it a secret from his or her current employer. In addition, 56 percent of respondents also respond to a job when they are not immediately looking for another job.

The research was conducted by PanelWizard on behalf of Monsterboard, and looked at more than 500 working employees. It showed that 55 percent of respondents pick any day for an interview to take place. However, only 7 percent used this as a pretext to be away from their employer that day.

According to Gian Zandona, managing director at Monsterboard, you have to weigh the consequences of informing your boss and whether this will hurt your current situation. "As an employee you stand completely within your rights if you apply somewhere else, but remember what the potential consequences could be before you submit it to your boss. The influence of this on the workfloor could be to the detriment of the work atmosphere, but it can also strengthen your position at work if your employer do not want to lose you."

In addition, the study shows that 56 percent of respondents also respond to a job when they are not necessarily looking for another job. When a nice job comes along, 20 percent respond directly to this. Of the total Dutch population, 44 percent are not at all looking for employment in other jobs, especially since this group has no interest in another job. Young people are the most active on the labour market. Two-thirds springs into action when a vacancy comes online. 23 percent of young people have no interest in a new job.
