Higher youth minimum wage could lead to a rise in youth unemployment

Increasing youth minimum wage as high as adults’ minimum wage will eventually lead to a rise in youth unemployment, stated the Verbond van Nederlandse Ondernemingen (VNO) and Nederlands Christelijk Werkgeversverbond (NCW) also known as the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers.

Last week, the union argued over the increase of minimum wage and started a campaign against it, reported Nu.nl. According to the two organisations, under-educated youth will be particularly affected by the Federatie Nederlandse Vakbeweging’s (FNV) plan. The FNV believes in rewarding employees based on productivity rather than their age.

VNO-NCW also mentioned that youth unemployment will be quite harmful to the Dutch economy and society with young people not having the opportunity to build up career experience. The results of no or little career building experience may be harmful for their future careers, especially for young people who need to develop their productivity through experience.
