Now that the economic crisis is behind us, it seems obvious that many people are thinking about changing jobs. But nothing is less true: three quarters of the employees of SMEs and family businesses would like to work for the same boss at all times.

According to an inquiry by BDO consultancy firm, the employees of the above-mentioned companies prefer better working conditions such as holiday days and a business car rather than a high salary. In the survey, 1400 employees of SME and family companies were questioned and they prefer to be ‘in their comfort zone’, rather than be constantly challenged.

Furthermore, the research shows a big difference between high and low-skilled employees when it comes to motivation. The less educated go for security, such as a good pension, whereas the highly educated prefer a salary depending on their performance, for example in the form of bonuses.

Higher Educated Are More Ambitious

Higher educated employees prefer to change employers compared to the lower educated employees (31% vs. 14%), and compared to the lower educated, the preference for a high salary is also higher (62% vs. 43%).

The survey also shows that employees of family businesses are more loyal than their colleagues in another SME. Remarkably, in a family business, employees have less need for freedom than in SMEs.
