The smooth spinning economy and the falling unemployment rate help ensure that most consumers will spend their vacation money rather than deposit it in their savings account or paying off debts.

Of the people who spend their vacation money (which is at least 8% of gross annual salary), more than 60% will spend the money for what it is originally intended—going on a holiday. Four in ten of the Dutch book a few weeks of sun in Southern Europe, or rain in their own country, according to a study by the ING Economic Bureau.

Young People Prefer to Save

Remarkably, the group that prefers to play it safe by saving or paying off debts is the twenty to forty year olds. The statement according to economists is that older people had larger buffers to keep up against the economically poor years.

In addition, saving is important for the twenties and thirties who want to buy a home. Due to the stricter mortgage rules, they have to spend more and more money on their first property purchase.
