Colleagues’ noise is at the top as a factor that has the most negative impact on productivity. Three-quarters of Dutch employees work in an open office space and 61% experience moderate or too much noise.

A survey of 525 of No Ties commissioned by Plantronics, shows that 40% of workers are having a negative impact on productivity by noise from colleagues. The personnel productivity decreases especially in buildings that are mainly constructed of concrete and glass, and are not provided with good sound insulation.

33% of employees indicate that an office with separate space for different activities would improve performance. 56% indicate that they could be more focused when any form of distraction would be absent. Also, 44% of employees say that it would improve productivity and 35% that they will make fewer errors during work, with less noise.

Effective Cooperation

24% of employees say the location of the workplaces plays a role in noise pollution. Almost half of respondents think that cost savings were the main reason for designing the office space where they work. This is remarkable because they indicate that the ability to focus attention during work is the most important requirement in a work environment.

At number two is the presence of natural light, followed by having room for effective cooperation with colleagues. Companies seem to want to save costs when designing offices, and take little or no measures to reduce noise pollution.
