STRATBOURG – The European Commission urges the Netherlands to open up its labour market fully to Rumanians and Bulgarians.
Employees from all 27 EU-countries should be treated equally. This is one of the many proposals put forward by the executive committee of the European Union last Wednesday in order to save the European labour market. The Netherlands does not stand alone in this matter. There are a total of nine EU countries that will not allow Rumanians and Bulgarians to work without a work permit. This is also the case in Germany.
Minimum wage
A plea for setting a minimum wage in every country is also part of the proposals. As in Germany, there is no legal compulsory minimum wage in many of the member states. “Minimum wage plays an important role in the battle against poverty and injustice”, according to the commission. The minimum wage may vary in different countries or different sector.
Unemployment
All these measures should stop the rising unemployment numbers and create jobs in Europe. European commissioner Laszlo Andor (Employment and Social Affairs) spoke of “dramatic and unacceptable” European unemployment numbers. “Creating jobs should become a European priority”. According to the commission there are three sectors in which there will be room for quite a rise in the number of jobs in the next few years: in ICT, in the health sector and within the ‘green’ economy.
