Currently, some 4,000 people work at VDL Nedcar. At the end of 2012 when VDL took over Nedcar, there were still about 1,500. With an extra 1,200 new jobs there, the number of factory workers will soon be more than tripled.
In Born VDL Nedcar makes the ordinary Minis since 2014, and in late 2015 the Mini Cabrio for the BMW Group. The Countryman is a new addition. The production of the new model starts before the end of this year.
Salvation Through VDL
NedCar has a capacity to produce up to 200,000 cars per year. The Mini Countryman will be only produced in Born; in the future it will also be available as a plug-in hybrid version. The Limburg car factory is not connected to a single car maker, but it is open for orders from all brands.
In 2012, Eindhoven’s industrial group VDL bought Nedcar for a symbolic price of 1 euro from Japan's Mitsubishi. In 2014, the factory was reopened and production of cars was stopped for half a year. Last year the factory contributed significantly to the turnover of the VDL Group by an estimated 2.3 billion Euros.
