It was a busy summer for the ANWB: in total there were 630,000 telephone calls, of which were a portion of travellers who were sick. If you become ill during your vacation, it is a pity, but there is also some good news: the day(s) you can get back from your boss.
Most people on vacation who became ill were suffering from gastrointestinal complaints. And the advice of the FNV to those people is not to eat yoghurt or drink a lot of water, but to report themselves to their boss that they are sick.
Tips
The days that you are sick are in fact considered sick days, and not counted as vacation days by your employer. At least, if you do it right. And in accordance with the FNV you do it as follows:
If you become ill on a holiday, report it always to your boss. To avoid discussions, it is convenient to go to a doctor. Ask for an official medical document and make sure that there is always a diagnosis, the advice of the doctor and an expectation of disease duration. It allows you to show your boss you were really sick.
Be honest. When you are at home with a minor cold, donot say right away that you are sick, and do not exaggerate your illness.
Your holiday cannot always be converted to sick leave. Labour law lawyer Floris Asscher from Pellicaan Lawyers tells intermediaries that different rules may apply to statutory holidays, but that should be in your employment contract or collective agreement. All statutory holidays you can convert to illness days.
And did you get better again? Still wait a little bit with those cocktails on the beach, and first let know your boss that you are better again. When you are back home, you can discuss together when you can use your vacation days again.
