In order to prevent evasion of the statutory minimum salary, wages will be no longer paid in cash in the Netherlands. From the 1st of January of next year, a salary fraction equal to the minimum wage should be paid by bank transfer only. Employers may also contribute to employees’ health insurance costs but they will no longer deduct it from the minimum wage.

Lodewijk Asscher Minister of Social Affairs stated on the Parliament on Friday these measuresare introduced to create a helathy climate of respect for the labour market rules.

Besides, Asscher wants to give to the “Inspectie SZW” (former Work Inspection) more power to enhance the rules.

Weaknesses of the labour market
Addressing duster practices and constructions is a top priority for Asscher. “Decent way of work in our country doesn't always happen by itself. Duster practices and constructions are the problems of our labour market and a slap in the face of hardworking employees and honest entrepreneurs. We will never win the competition against China about labour costs but our goal should focus on intelligence and added value.''

Trade Union Federation FNV responds positively about this new reform. This law can bring solutions to many employees in the broadcasting sector, in construction, and in all the other sectors where dishonest constructions are the order of the day.'' The employee organization is there to ensure that the law also makes possible that directors become responsible if they do not take responsibility.
