Frequently Asked Questions about Outplacement

Have you been told that you may be laid off or have you been laid off in the meantime? Then outplacement may be something for you. The purpose of outplacement is to help employees who have been dismissed, or who are threatened with dismissal, to find a new job.

Why outplacement?

Due to the rapidly changing economy, companies are forced to adapt quickly. An employee is no longer in the right place faster than before. Outplacement ensures that this employee is guided to another job which is a good solution for both parties.

How does outplacement work?
In outplacement a job is not sought for you and you are not offered a new job. You have to look for a new job yourself. Normally outplacement lasts until you have a new job. In some cases the guidance also continues during the probationary period.

What is outplacement guidance?
Then in some cases you are entitled to outplacement. Outplacement guidance means that a specialized service provider helps the dismissed or resigning employee(s) to quickly find a new job or to start self-employment.

What do you need to consider in outplacement?
The most important thing when choosing an outplacement agency is that you have confidence in the person who will guide you. Always ask for a free introductory meeting with your outplacement consultant before you start an outplacement process. The feeling of trust must be mutual.

How long does an outplacement program last?
The duration of an outplacement course differs per candidate and per situation. Usually an outplacement program lasts 6 months. The minimum duration is 3 months and the maximum duration is 12 months.

What are the costs of outplacement?
The costs of an actual outplacement process vary considerably. This
This is due to the fact that the duration differs per client. An outplacement process usually costs between 3.500 and 10,000 euro and usually lasts between 6 and 9 months. Sometimes the employer has already selected an agency, sometimes you can choose an agency yourself.

Who has to pay for outplacement?
The legislator provides that outplacement support never has to be paid by the dismissed employee. In certain cases, however, the employer can deduct 4 weeks of salary from the severance payment.

Do I have a right to outplacement if I resign?
You have a right to outplacement in two situations. If you are dismissed, then you have a right to outplacement when you meet these two conditions: You are not dismissed for an urgent reason. You have a notice period of at least 30 weeks or a severance pay that covers a period of at least 30 weeks.

Is outplacement compulsory?
Then outplacement is a Right and an Obligation for employer and employee. Your employer is obliged to set up an employment unit and offer outplacement within that framework. As an employee, you are obliged to follow outplacement.
