FNV (Federation Dutch Labour Movement) wants permanent contracts after one year
AMSTERDAM – Every employee should automatically be offered the right to a permanent contract after having worked for the same employer for a year, according to the FNV.
The trade union stated so last Wednesday preceding the hearing on flexible labour and security in the Dutch Lower Chamber. The FNV, who so far mainly focussed its efforts on employees working with permanent contracts, is now looking to improve the position of flex workers. Catelene Passchier, the labour conditions coordinator for the FNV, is very concerned about the increasing number of workers making use of temporary or flexible contracts. Especially young people are working under these conditions.
Standard
According to the UWV (employee insurance) last year, a mere two thousand Dutch employees were given a permanent contract. The year before that number was 83 thousand. “Permanent contracts, containing a set number of working hours to provide a living, should become standard once again”, according to Passchier. In order to achieve this, the FNV wants to get rid of pay-roll companies. These companies employ workers and consequently ‘lend’ them out to other companies. These companies usually do not offer any form of job security or further any training. Employees working under these conditions usually do not build up any pension. “In our opinion you are either employed by the company you are ‘lent’ to or employed by a job agency, those are the only two options.” according to Passchier.
