The Netherlands can play a leading role in the world in the so-called “circular economy”, which recycles raw materials and products as much as possible. ABN Amro bank writes in its report that the Netherlands has many assets to take the lead around the circular economy globally, thanks to the knowledge and expertise present in the country. This knowledge can be exported abroad.
According to ABN Amro, the Netherlands is the leader in waste recycling, where more than 80% of the waste is recycled. The circular economy helps generate new jobs and it improves the image of the Netherlands abroad. In addition, there are benefits to public health and the country is less dependent on the import of raw materials.
The government has the ambition that in 2050, almost no primary raw materials will be used and the economy must run fully on reusable raw materials.
In order to make the successful transition to the circular economy, ABN Amro says more steps are needed. For example, the government should create as favorable a condition as possible for the reusability of raw materials by adapting, among other things, legislation and regulations.
Deposit Money
In addition, all relevant parties in the circular economy must work closely together in a well-organized network. Banks play an important role, according to ABN Amro.
Furthermore, consumers must also participate in the circular economy. They need to be made more aware of the reuse of raw materials and get involved in circular behavior, for example, in the form of deposit money.
