On the former ship of Veronica radio, asylum seekers met employers at a job fair last Saturday in Amsterdam. There were about five hundred people on the ship, of which sixty percent were asylum seekers.
“It's gone very well, and the employers were very satisfied with the education and skills of many asylum seekers,” said Sandra Rake.

The job is part of the initiative “Ontmoet een vluchteling” (Meet a Refugee) from Rake and Nimet Akdemir, director of the Veronica Ship. Various companies came to the network day, among them were employers Randstad and Vacaturebank Amsterdam Jobs. In the past three days, 4,700 people have signed up.

The asylum seekers were mostly Syrians. Some already have a residence permit, others have just arrived, only having been in The Netherlands for two weeks. Those who have only just arrived were picked up from the refugee camp in Zaandam.

There will be more days of networking with volunteers and employers scheduled. The goal of “Ontmoet een vluchteling” is to serve as an umbrella for various local initiatives.

You can also volenteer to help the effort. The volunteers will soon receive an e-mail of the many initiatives in their respective regions
