Around 700 thousand employees in The Netherlands have difficulty with reading, writing, and communicating in Dutch. The effects are clearly visible in the workplace. The reading of care records or safety instructions could, for example, leads to difficulties. The Language Agreement should have an effect on employers, making them give a higher priority for language use in the workplace.
According to Ad van Zutphen, division manager for broadcasting & detachment at Driessen HRM, the study gave insight into how important language use is for employees. “Everyone has become more aware of the role of language is in their work. Many flexible employees saw our offer as an opportunity to improve their skills.”
The Language Agreement will benefit both employers and employees. Better language skills would contribute to a higher job satisfaction, less absenteeism, better communication, and increased safety in the workplace. Additionally, Zutphen indicates that employees improve their general knowledge of Dutch in the process. “These flexible modules, our employees become more employable with various clients, and of course in their overall career.”
