Medical Students Want Their Study Finances Back: 'No Time For Side Jobs'

Our doctors of tomorrow are very worried. With the abolition of study finance, they lost their only source of income during the three years required internship. And so they ask Minister Bussemakerhuis for help.
All medical students have a sort of internship of three years, for 46 hours per week. A tough job, where they carry a lot of responsibility, but get paid nothing.
A side job is not recommended, says promoter Christiaan Ponsen. “You do not want us in the evening at 8 o'clock working at a restaurant, and the next day we must assist in an operation. That is irresponsible”.

Compensation of 288 Euros Per Month
Christiaan Ponsenwants a solution to be foundfor himself and the 7200 other interns in the Netherlands. They ask Education Minister Bussemaker a fee of 288 Euros per month. When calculated, this amounts to 25 million Euros per year.
For many students it is not possible to borrow that amount, he said. “The doctors that are trained now will not really earn tons more afterwards. If you look at the starting salary of a medical doctor, that's 30 cents higher than a civil servant”. That salary based on a 36-hour working week is between 2400 and 2750 Euros gross.

How Much Does a Doctor Earn?
Specialists in a partnership earn about 193,400 Euros gross per year. An employed doctor earns approximately 158,000 Euros. The difference in these earnings is on the account of the hospital.
For other doctors this discussion does not apply, even though they do not always earn as much. According to the same article in the medical journal the salary of an independent doctor (depending on the size of the practice), for example, ends up to an average of almost one hundred thousand per year. Generally employed doctors may earn up to 130% of a ministerial salary (228,599 Euros per year).
