The FNV trade union spoke of a “massive migration of positions at Unilever to low-wage countries.” The functions will not expire, but will be transferred to locations such as Mexico, Bangalore, Manila, and Katowice.
Unilever said their commitment is still focused on guiding the supernumeraries for new work. This move is designed to further centralise certain activities. The multinational company points out that a similar centralisation have led precisely to 2013, where 450 positions were moved to the Netherlands.
Unions
Worldwide, Unilever has around 175 thousand employees. Of this, about 3.2 thousand work in the Netherlands. Moreover, it takes a while for the staff involved to be informed in detail about the implications of the transfer. The company will first consult with the works council.
“Most of the people affected are in their thirties, in IT, finance and accounting functions,” said FNV director Marjolein Dubbelaar. “These are mostly people with young families.”
On paper
“In addition to the loss of these jobs, the reorganisation also affects the way we work within Unilever,” added union CNV. “For the Dutch sites, the support in the area of IT and finance will soon stand at a distance. On paper, some reorganisation seems than efficient, but in practice, it provides extra hassle.”
