How to write a personal profile for your CV/ Resume?

Categories: * CV / Resume,

For the Dutch labour market, it is suggested to include a short introduction about yourself in your CV. However, often people find it quite difficult to decide what to write about in this short text, especially when they are applying for a job in the Netherlands for the first time. Here's how you can start:

The passage should be located right below your personal details. Give your text a short head line. For example, it could be called "Personal Profile", "CV Summary" or "Resume Introduction". This head line depends on the design of your CV and if it’s even needed or not.

The text itself should not be longer than 4-5 lines. Before you start writing, think about what makes you special, unique and different as well as what is important for the recruiter to know about you and your career. As an expat in the Netherlands, it is important to point out your language skills. Furthermore, mention the most essential fields you've been working in, while always staying aligned with the position you are applying for, meaning that you should focus on mentioning the steps in your career that may help you get the new job and leave out the ones that won’t.

In a next sentence you can stand out with your competencies. Reflect your key skills consciously instead of just writing down nicely sounding adjectives. Knowledge about “essential software” in your field can also be important to mention.

By subsequently stating your objectives you are giving your CV more direction and showing recruiters that you know what you want and that this specific job is exactly what you are looking for. This part of your profile statement should always be adjusted every time you apply for another position.

Here you see examples of possible personal profiles for your CV:
