Highly Educated Immigrants in The Netherlands Are Still Not Chosen by the Employers

Naturalized Dutch immigrants are increasingly speaking better Dutch and are becoming better educated. But that hardly leads to more job opportunities, according to a report by the Social and Cultural Planning Office (SCP). Although they are better educated, non-Western migrants are three times as likely to be unemployed as those with a Dutch background.

“You would expect that non-Western migrants are better equipped for the labour market, partly due to higher level of education, to have a better position in the labour market”, said spokesman William Huijnk.

Employment Discrimination

Huijnk says, “In times when the economy is bad, the employer has a lot of candidates to choose from. Here, the non-Western migrants get the short end”.

According to the SCP, unease among non-Western immigrants increased over the past 15 years with those having less job opportunities. Meanwhile, Dutch women with Turkish or Moroccan backgrounds are better off at the workplace, and there is now a larger middleclass among migrants.

Feel Dutch

The report also shows that about half of the young and second generation Turkish and Moroccan Dutch are feeling strongly Dutch. About three quarters of them feel strongly Dutch, Turkish or Moroccan respectively. They have native Dutch people in their social network, but in their free time they are having more contact with people with a similar background.
