More than 4,000 extra jobs in the Netherlands thanks to foreign investors

Active lobbying by the Dutch government resulted in € 827 million in foreign investment for the Dutch economy in the first six months of this year. Together these investments are good for 4,332 extra jobs in the Netherlands. Minister Henk Kamp of Economic Affairs announced this on 30 September 2013 during the opening of the new global research center ‘Nutricia Research’ in Utrecht, part of the French company Danone.

Attractive for foreign companies
“With a highly educated labor force and good facilities, the Netherlands is an attractive country for foreign companies”, according to the minister. “These investments are good for the Dutch economy, bringing in income and jobs in the Netherlands"

Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency
Total foreign investments have more than doubled compared to the first half year in 2012, with € 378 million in investments and 1,973 jobs. The Danone research center offers work to a minimum of 400 people and has been established in the city of Utrecht thanks to amongst others the lobby by the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA). Danone will work on the development of medical food and baby food in the research center.

Deliberate decision
According to minister Kamp the French company Danone deliberately chose for the Netherlands. “We have a lot of innovation knowledge in the Netherlands, which is decisive for companies like Danone. Twelve of the world’s biggest agrifood companies have research centers in the Netherlands. And Wageningen University is world renowned for its food research.”

Food research
Besides the NFIA, the University of Utrecht, the province and the municipality of Utrecht were also committed to realizing the Danone establishment at the Utrecht Science Park. In 2007 the French company took over Dutch Royal Numico, of which Nutricia is part. Worldwide Danone invests € 275 million per annum in food research.

The NFIA helps and advises foreign companies on the establishment, rolling out and/or expansion of their international activities in the Netherlands. Furthermore, the NFIA focuses on the promotion of the Netherlands abroad as a country with an attractive investment and business climate, and it plays an active role in maintaining that.
