Impression of the new Biotech Training Facility

On February 25th the design- and build contract was signed. The contract value is approximately € 5 million. The Biotech Training Facility will be a unique international GMP training facility for employees in the (bio)pharmaceutical industry that will meet the urgent need for highly qualified personnel in the sector. BAM Utiliteitsbouw will construct the Biotech Training Facility at Leiden Bio Science Park.

The life sciences sector is struggling to find sufficient well trained staff. With many promising products

in the pipeline, it is expected that the need for staff will only increase in the coming years. At the Biotech Training Facility employees and students will be trained in working under GMP conditions with state-of-the-art facilities. GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) is the strict safety and quality regime for the manufacturing of drugs.

Important asset
Worldwide there are only five to ten similar (bio)pharmaceutical training facilities. That makes the Biotech Training Facility an important asset for Leiden Bio Science Park, the city of Leiden and the (inter)national life sciences sector. Leiden city mayor Henri Lenferink: "This facility at the Bio Science Park not only shows that Leiden is at the forefront as an innovative city, but also that we collaborate at a regional level in attracting and retaining knowledge workers. In that way we make Leiden region even more attractive for companies, employees and students."

First courses
The coming months BAM will complete the design. This autumn the construction will start until mid 2015. It is expected that the first courses in the Biotech Training Facility at Leiden Bio Science Park will go ahead from September 2015. The facility is dedicated to the up-to-date training of employees of (inter)national life sciences companies and students in the life sciences and is also suitable as a test and demonstration site for the latest equipment.

Close collaboration
The Biotech Training Facility is an initiative of the Leiden Bio Science Park foundation. It is supported by the European Regional Development Fund and will be developed in cooperation with the city of Leiden, Leiden University, ABN AMRO bank and several companies.

Inside out
The Biotech Training Facility is designed by Ector Hoogstad Architects in Rotterdam. The design was created by looking from the inside out. The processes in the cleanrooms were incorporated into the plan and the shell around the building was designed on this basis. It results in a logical and functional layout. The glass facade makes the processes occurring inside clearly visible from outside. The Biotech Training Facility will consist of three floors and a total floor area of 2,400 m2. On the ground floor offices and laboratories are located. The first floor will be equipped with cleanrooms. On the second floor is the technical installation area that will also be used for instructional purposes. The building will locate about 60 students and staff.
