Starting from 2017 brand new fathers can enjoy a few days longer paid leave after the birth of their child. The leave is extended from two days to five. Minister Asscher believes that an extension of the birth leave for fathers would be 'very good'.

The minister does not confirm yet that these plans would be announced during the budget plans for Prinsjesdag, but he would appreciate it. "Because we know that it is good for the child and for the parents if the father is involved in the first days of the child. Then agreements about care in the following years are also better. "

The government parties VVD and PvdA have 375 million euros to spend. Jeroen Dijsselbloem, Minister of Finance states that the budget this year is relatively ‘spacious” after difficult crisis years.

The Labour Party wants to spend this 'extra' money for care. the 75 million uit of this budget should be spent to cover the costs of extended paternity leave. The rest of the budget wil be spent ( 133 million) for nursing homes. The VVD wants to spend most of the money on defense.
