The Dutch political party, Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) is proposing demotion and lower salaries for mature workers to decrease unemployment in this group.

According to the Financieele Dagblad (FD), CDA’s Scientific Institute reported that the elderly tend to have difficulties finding employment, partly because they are more costly than other staff. Demotion is supposed to contribute to reducing unemployment amongst mature workers.

The report highlights that seniors’ employment needs to be brought more in line with those of other workers. Also, Hans de Boer, the chairman of The Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO-NCW), advocated demotion at the end of last year.

Furthermore, the CDA is proposing the implementation of disability insurance for all workers including permanent employees and self-employed people. This is supposed to reduce the gap between these groups. Also, CDA wants unemployment duration to be further reduced but benefits increased in order to encourage jobless people to find work as fast as possible.
