Netherlands in top 5 most innovative economies European Union
The Innovation Union Scoreboard shows that the Netherlands has risen to the fifth place this year of most innovative economies in the European Union. 'This great score shows that the Dutch economy is very strong. The Netherlands belongs in the top five.' says minister Kamp of Economic Affairs.
Innovation performance in the EU has improved year on year in spite of the continuing economic crisis, but the innovation divide between Member States is widening. Drivers of innovation growth in the EU include SMEs and the commercialisation of innovations, together with excellent research systems. However the fall in business and venture capital investment over the years 2008-2012 has negatively influenced innovation performance.

Good cooperation researchers and entrepeneurs
The Netherlands has risen from seventh to fifth place, because of the high level of academic research, a good cooperation between researchers and entrepeneurs and the growing number of innovative SMEs. Regarding the company spendings on research and development, the Netherlands relatively stays behind. Minister Kamp: 'That is why the government stimulates companies to invest more in innovation by tax reduction, dropping rules and providing more venture capital."
Brabant: innovation leader
The Innovation Union Scoreboard is a comparative assessment of the research and innovation performance of the EU27 Member States and the relative strengths and weaknesses of their research and innovation systems. Every two years the Innovation Union Scoreboard is accompanied by a Regional Innovation Scoreboard. In 2012, Brabant was identified as an innovation leader in this scoreboard. The province in the South of the Netherlands is home to open innovation campuses such as High Tech Campus Eindhoven, Automotive Campus Helmond, Pivot Park in Oss and Green Chemistry Campus in Bergen op Zoom.
