Oxford University asked 1,200 managers and employees what they would prefer to see or happen at their work. Nearly three-quarters of them indicated that they would want to work in an office garden and more than half of the total group had one clear intention: silence.
In fact, the workers felt that silence is more important than say free lunch. Especially young people are annoyed by the noise. To be able to concentrate better, many of them listen to music while they work, or they look for a quiet corner.
More workers in the Netherlands suffer from a noisy environment, which is evidenced by numerous posts on twitter. Remarkably, it is often the smallest things that bother them. A much cited study surrounding noise in the workplace is one in 1998. The main conclusion: anyone working in a noisy environment is interrupted regularly. This makes it harder to concentrate.
Several other studies also show that stress increases due to excessive noise in the workplace, and that people have less desire to talk. An American company even says that productivity drops by 66% with noise.
