At present, foreigners (with lots of work experience) are awarded a beginner's salary in the Netherlands, but that should change according to the European Commission. Asscher has previously sent a proposal to the European Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs Marianne Thyssen on June 2015. The proposal states that the posting of a European worker should be limited to two years. Then the employee has the same conditions as any other worker from the same country. Also added was that it should be possible for Member States to demand that contractors pay the same wages to their employees and the client.
“This is an important next step to level the free movement of workers in Europe. The government has worked hard to make equal pay for equal work a priority in Brussels,” says Asscher.
The proposal is supported by six other countries. Further research will show whether agreement can be reached within the Council.
