Unemployment benefit applications in the Netherlands
THE HAGUE – Benefit authority UWV has temporarily employed over 200 employees in order to process the steep increase in the number of applications for social welfare payment.
The UWV announced last Thursday that another 300 people have been employed in order to support job-seekers. The Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment has made a budget available for this end. “These ‘new’ employees are mostly UWV staff members who have been made redundant due to cutbacks” according to the organisation. The number of applications for social welfare payment rose by 18 per cent in the first eight months of this year. By the end of August there were 304,000 people receiving welfare benefits. According to the authority, 168,000 job-seekers found employment since the beginning of this year. 154,500 of them were on benefits at the time.

Wajong

The UWV offered 4400 long-term unemployed people so-called ‘made to measure’ employment. Of that group, 45 per cent were actually hired for the vacancy which was selected by the benefit authority. In addition, 4000 Wajong (young physically disabled people) and 14,000 older job-seekers (55 and over) found employment through the UWV.
