Every year, holiday grants for countless Dutch employees are an “extra”. However, this year, it might not be the case for many. According to a recent ABN AMRO study case, 16% of Dutch employees’ holiday grants and tax returns are actually needed by them to survive the upcoming months ahead.

ANP stated that not everyone is able to use their holiday grant to go on a luxurious holiday, particularly workers that earn less than the average income (less than 35,000 euros gross per year). For these employees, the holiday grant is usually used to pay off certain bills.

Out of the 1200 respondents for the study, a majority said they used the whole grant or part of it for a holiday while 16% will place the grant in a savings account or need it for a large purchase or would use it to pay bills.

Around the same time that the holiday grants are given, many Dutch workers also receive tax returns, which are often also spent on holidays.

At the moment, 40% of the workforce can in fact go on holidays without a holiday grant while the other 30% actually needs this extra money or income for holidays.
