This also applies if the entire department gets credit. But, if a few employees within a department get a pat on their shoulders, you will see that those are precisely the ones who were not often at work or who did not work hard enough within the team.
Productivity Increases
The point is that you especially give a pat on the shoulder to your best employees, explains researcher Arjan Non. Then, precisely those who are least performing will work harder. Their productivity rise, by up to 10%, he says.
“People are conformist”, Non explains. “If they know that others work harder than they do, then with a pat on the shoulder to the hardest workers is a signal that they need to switch up a gear. You do not want to be the weak link”.
Not Too Much and Not Too Little
The manager should not give credit to a number of employees. It turns out that when eight people are working in a division, you can best compliment the three workers who do the most work. That works better than giving compliments to everyone, or just to the best performer.
According to Non, giving compliments should be aimed to a limited number of staff as a good and cost-effective method for management to increase productivity. The employees have to be aware of the labour norms in the group.
