Lowest Number of Enterprises Bankrupt Since 2008

The number of companies that went bankrupt in a year, dropped last year to its lowest level in eight years. At the same time, the number of companies in the Netherlands has reached a record high, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands and Chamber of Commerce.

In 2016, according to the CBS, a small number of companies and institutions went bankrupt, about 4400, almost a fifth less than a year earlier. Purely looking at companies, the decline was even greater: there are 4,000 companies that went bankrupt last year, less than the year before, when there was a big peak in bankruptcies.

In construction, it is clearly better: there are much less companies bankrupt. Also in the financial sector and the market, the number of bankruptcies decreased.

Record Number of Starters

At the same time, the number of companies in the Netherlands has reached a record high, according to figures from the Chamber of Commerce. In 2016 there were 192,672 starter- companies, institutions and (part-time) freelancers. In total there are now 1.8 million companies in the Netherlands, of which 882,694 are freelancers.

In all sectors, there was an increase in the number of companies, except in agriculture and horticulture (-15%) and wholesale (0%). Especially in industry (20% growth), logistics (7%) and healthcare (7%), there are many new companies.

The number of companies that stopped working without bankruptcy last year was also at record levels: 129,456 companies decided to quit in 2016.
