Women Call In Sick More Often Than Men

Women are on average 6% more often sick than men. Except in Zeeland, where women are less often sick, according to research from Acture, a company that helps people on sick leave. The company studied absenteeism in the Netherlands, and the differences between the provinces.

It is notable that women are sick an average of 10.3 days per year, and men 9.7. There are large differences per province: women in Zeeland are less often sick (8.9 days sick), and women in Flevoland more (11.5 days).

Other Complaints

That women are more likely to be sick is because they often suffer from conditions in which they have been absent for longer, such as psychological problems, says Acture. From a joint study by Statistics Netherlands, TNO, UWV Knowledge Center and SCP in 2012, it was already shown that women are more often sick, but with a shorter duration.

The four parties concluded that it had to do with several factors. One of them is that men are working more in leadership positions than women, and therefore have more influence on the content of their work. In addition, women are more sick if they do heavy physical work, such as lifting patients in nursing work, and if they had previously suffered from a poor working atmosphere.

The combination between work and family, and the experience of pregnancy and childbirth play a small role in the difference between men women.

Least Sickness in Noord-Holland and Utrecht

From all the provinces covered in the study of Acture, Utrecht and Noord-Holland have the “healthiest” people. In Noord-Holland, the employees are on average less sick and in Utrecht they call in less sick.

This is explained due to the younger inhabitants in the Randstad, and the higher level of education they have, says Acture. In addition, workers probablyfeel more pressure to go back to work when they are sick, because there are many other job seekers in the Randstad and they can be replaced quickly. “These are all motivators to get better quickly and get to work”, concludes Maudie Derks, CEO of Acture.

More Often Sick Now that the Crisis Is Over

In October, all figures out of the Social and Cultural Planning Office showed that people report more sick again. Now that the economy is stronger, it seems people ‘dare’ to be sick because they have less fear of losing their jobs.

In 2014 people reported sick at 3.7% of the days and in 2015 it rose to 4%.
