Possibilities for jobs in government will remain limited

The Netherlands has about 50,000 less public employees compared to a decade ago. It does not appear that the government will take as many people again.

This is expected, says the Uitvoeringsinstituut Werknemersverzekeringen (Institute for Employee Insurance, UWV). The number of jobs will probably increase slightly over the coming years, but remain far from the level before the financial crisis.

The UWV expects that public employment will continue to shrink until 2017, where it will begin to stabilise. According to the social security agency, there is still little room for new employment in the sector.

Compact civil service

The government in 2014 had over 412 thousand employees. That is eleven percent less than in 2004. The decline has happened mainly because successive governments in recent years have sought for a more compact public administration.

In particular, the municipal and provincial governments have become smaller: they work by more than a fifth less staff than ten years ago.
