THE HAGUE – Every youth who has been without work for three months should be offered an internship, work-study programme or job by his or her local council.
Last Saturday, these plans were presented by the PvdA in order to combat unemployment among youths. The party has reserved 150 million euro in next year’s electoral platform for this purpose. Recent numbers of the CBS (Central Bureau for Statistics) show a sharp increase in unemployment among youths. According to Member of Parliament, Mariëtte Hamer, there is a ‘deafening silence’ in the cabinet when it comes to this issue. The obligatory work-study programmes for youths, the PvdA is aiming for, should prevent youngsters from being excluded for longer periods. According to the party, Finland and Sweden have booked quite some success using these programmes.
Staying on at school
The PvdA plans also state, among other things, that staying on at school should be stimulated and that there should be agreements made with authorities concerning hiring young people and people with certain work related disabilities. The PvdA is also in favour of improving possibilities regarding education in order to ensure that students do not follow vague courses only to find out after having finished, that there is no work to be found in that particular field.
