Last year, the Christmas trade went from an additional revenue of 800 million euros. It came to a sum comparable to the previous year.
The recovery of the economy continues and that is also noticeable in the shopping, retailers say. The consumer has voted on average more positively about retail and industry, and also show an increased willingness to buy.
This includes money spent on gifts, the Christmas dinner, and new outfits that are purchased specially for Christmas. A new trend this year is the outdoor barbecue at Christmas, in the garden around the fire pit with a glass of mulled wine. Retailers have indicated that more and more Dutch people are following this trend.
To respond to all your Christmas shopping, many stores will be having longer opening hours over the coming days. Besides extra Sunday shopping, many cities are holding extra shopping evenings the Tuesday and Wednesday before Christmas to handle the expected crowds, according to Retail Netherlands. Despite this, shops must be closed 19:00 on Christmas Eve.
