Which job makes you happy? It is not only aspects like the salary or the balance between work and free time that are important. The extent to which your work is essential for the company is also necessary.

Whoever does important work within a company is happier than someone who performs less essential activities. Scientists have surveyed hundreds of employees in 5 different investigations and published the outcome on the Harvard Business Review website.

A Happy Programmer

According to the researchers, a lawyer is happier working at a law firm than a corporate lawyer at an advertising agency. A programmer is happier with a job at a tech company than if he is a programmer at a communications office.

The research shows that employees are happy if they are important to the company. They are crucial to the company. An advertising agency simply continues when the business lawyer goes away. But a law firm cannot be without lawyers, they are indispensable to the office. The same goes for painters at a painting company. The more essential your work is, the happier you are.

Emotionally More Involved

The researchers also found that workers who do essential work for their company are more emotionally involved, less insecure about their jobs and less likely to have a burnout. The investigations have shown no adverse effects.

Finally, the researchers focus on employers. Bosses would like to keep their key employees happy, but generally they are already happy. It would be more advisable, according to scientists, if employers were to work hard for employees in less essential positions. They are less attached to the organization and you could involve them more with extra attention.
