Do Women Really Earn a Third Less Than Men?

Women are still significantly disadvantaged in the Netherlands — it was revealed last month by the Gender Gap Report. The report received much attention in the media: the pay gap could be as high as 32%.

The Gender Gap Index expresses to what extent there is a difference between men and women in a country. It examines different things, such as how many women work full time and are involved in politics.

To find out if there is a difference in pay between men and women, CEOs referred to the following question: “In your country, for equal work, to what extent are wages for women equal to those of men?” Respondents could rate between oneand seven. A seven means that, according to the directors, there is no difference between men and women in wages.

The Netherlands scored 4.78.This figure was later converted to a scale from 0 to 1, and Netherlands scored a 0.68. Participants in the study therefore indicated that there is a difference between men and women in terms of wages.

How Much Less Do Women Earn?

The figure will not say anything about the exact salary difference. CBS reported in 2012 a wage difference of 4%. “But this is from the government and business sectors”, says Volberda. “The difference is much greater in the financial sector. There men especially have more bonuses and occasional rewards”.

He relies on the information provided by the Human Development Report, which has this data. It shows that a woman (2014) in the Netherlands earns on average $29,500 (U.S. dollars) and a man $61 641 (U.S. dollars) (estimated gross national income per capita).
“These figures are corrected”, he says since women in the Netherlands do a part-time job.
