Sending out job applications can be hard work. Occasionally, sending in an application actually leads to a job interview, in which case, you become faced with a whole new set of challenges—such as gathering the right information and preparing the right answers. Beyond that, an aspect of job interviews you should not overlook is presenting yourself in the right way.
Clothing
Dressing the part is crucial for making a good impression during a job interview. Wearing something that is overly casual can make you appear less professional or unprepared for the interview. Putting some effort into your outfit can demonstrate that you take the opportunity seriously. This means selecting more formal clothing is recommended. It should also be clean, and if necessary, ironed. Since your clothing reflects on you as a person, it should appear neat and presentable.
Something you should probably avoid wearing to the interview is a brand new outfit. Wear something that fits the part, but you also know you will feel comfortable in. Arrive slightly early to make sure you still appear presentable, right before the interview starts.
Accessories
Your choice in earrings is not relevant to the interview procedure. Some accessories that can prove useful, however, are a notebook, pens, your phone, business card, or other such items. If these prove necessary at any point during the interview procedure, having them with you can have a positive effect on the impression you make on your potential employer. Such accessories may be needed to jot down information your interviewer provides, or to share more of your contact details with them.
When you attend an interview, do also carry with you a copy of your resume, and whatever may be related to the interview—such as samples of your writing or reference letters. Though your employer is likely to bring a copy of your CV and anything else you submitted to your interview, it still helps you to appear responsible when you take these with you as well.
Manners
The personal information you share and the answers you provide during the interview should also be complemented with the right demeanor. This involves several smaller details.
When you greet your interviewer, make sure to greet him or her politely. During the interview, make eye contact, to prove that you are listening intently. Fidgeting or not paying close attention can make you seem impolite. Sitting up straight is a small gesture that shows you take the interview seriously; slouching is comparable to dressing too casually. After the interview comes to an end, make sure you thank them for taking the time to interview you, and follow this up with an email afterwards. Keeping such things in mind is important when it comes to how you present yourself.
These steps, though perhaps not more crucial than the answers you prepare, can make you feel more comfortable during your interview, and help you present yourself well.
