An extra 17.8 million euros has been made available aimed at combating youth unemployment in The Netherlands.
Secretary of State, Jetta Klijnsma for the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment stated that this amount can be used for the ESF-Actie Jeugdprojecten or ESF-Action Youth projects by 35 central municipalities.
Klijnsma made this commitment on Twitter on Tuesday, 24 February on European Job Day. The projects are part of the regional approach to youth unemployment.
Last year, the central municipalities received about 41 million euros from the European Social Fund to support initiatives aimed specifically at young people who are unemployed as a result of the economic crisis. The support will end halfway through this year, but is now extended due to the extra subsidy that has become available. The ESF contribution to the project has increased and this has given municipalities more time to successfully complete ongoing actions.
"The latest figures confirm once again the intractable problem of youth unemployment. Although the economy is recovering, we are not there yet. Too many young people have trouble finding a job. That is primarily difficult for the young people but also for all of us,” stated the Secretary of State.
