Automattic employs around 4 hundred people. While they do have a headquarters, almost all of their employees work from home. When they get accepted for their position within the company, they're given 2.5 thousand dollars to buy themselves the much needed technology to develop for their business. If this is not enough of a bonus, they also take extra care to ensure that remote employees do not feel like they are being left out, by holding all of their meetings through skype or their own blogging tools.
However, the process of recruitment is where the most unusual changes occur. Firstly, it begins with Mullenweg himself, who spends nearly one third of his time screening all potential applicants. After this, applicants who get through the screening process are handed to the hiring manager, who invites the person to a skype chat. If the text-only interview goes well, they hand the candidate a coding project with no deadline, paid at 25 dollars an hour. This is done so that people can work on this project while also retaining their curent jobs. During this trial period, the hiring manager talks with the candidate through their blog, never through phone calls.
Finally, if the trial goes well, they are referred back to Mullenweg for a final chat, where the offer is made. Through this method, a new recruit can join the company without needing a single phone call from their direct manager or supervisor. This style of 'audition' recruitment is vastly different from other styles of recruitment, as it doesn't put stress of applicants, while making sure that the process caters to the time candidates have available to put towards the company.
