Dutch businesses increasingly struggle to find a suitable workforce. This has to do with the highly attractive economy in the Netherlands.
This trend is also reflected in entrepreneurial confidence, which is at its highest level since the end of 2008, according to research conducted by Statistics Netherlands, the Chamber of Commerce, the EIB, the MKB-Netherlands and VNO-NCW.
At the beginning of the third quarter, one in six entrepreneurs reported staff shortages as an obstacle in the pursuit of business. And since early 2016, a number of companies have a staff shortage.
The Biggest Shortage – New Opportunities
At the beginning of the third quarter, 16% of entrepreneurs experienced a shortage of labor; one year earlier this figure was at 7%. The number of companies suffering from insufficient demand for goods and services has declined steadily in recent years.
Service-oriented businesses are most affected by the shortage of labor. The problem of a staff shortage is also in the information and communications sector (especially in IT companies) and in the construction sector. This is less of a problem in the retail sector and the mining industry.
