In the last four years the Dutch economy has been growing steadily, and it continues more strongly in the last few quarters (with a 3.3% growth in the last twelve months). According to the CBS, this has only occurred twice since 2000.
The three most influential industries in the Dutch economy are exports, consumption and investment. These continue to indicate healthy growth based on all the data and developments in recent months. There is an increase in the construction of new buildings, shopping streets are constantly full of shoppers and new businesses, and the housing market is in high demand with new buyers/sellers. ‘Unfortunately the wages do not follow suit,’ says chief economist Peter Hein van Mulligen of the CBS.
The unemployment rate has dropped below five percent and businesses are desperate for additional employees. There has been a decrease in the number of bankruptcies. Quarterly earnings reports from many businesses are steady. There is more work, more jobs, more income, and more spending and investment. Household consumption, expanding businesses and rising exports assure this optimistic economic growth.
Statistics and Prognostics
Both the CBS and CPS provide necessary data that is the basis for the government budgets and plans by the Cabinet, which are presented on Prince's Day. The CBS illustrates past statistics showing how strong growth was in that specific quarter, and provides facts according to past data. The Central Planning Bureau (CPB) provides future figures, estimates, reflecting trends and forecasts.
The crushed economy recovered in autumn 2013 and since then has demonstrated quarterly growth. The strongest quarterly growth so far since the crisis in 2008 was at 3.2% in the first quarter of 2017. The financial crisis and the financial industry both affected the Netherlands, causing a drain on the economy. By causing many banks, companies and government to clash as a result. This strong new growth is showing positive steady growth, which is an optimistic jump-start to the Dutch economy since the crisis.
