Reintegration assistance provides more work opportunities

People on welfare who get help, with job application training for example, are more likely to find work, according to research by the Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (central bureau for statistics, CBS).

Of aid recipients that could make use of the so-called reintegration facility last year, more than 22 percent are employed. Of beneficiaries who received no such assistance, only 8 percent are now back to work.

Municipalities decide whether someone gets the chance to use the rehabilitation facility. The criteria vary throughout The Netherlands. It is not just about job training, but also schemes where the track is included, such as wage subsidies or participating sites.

In total, 42 percent of all welfare recipients in 2014 used some form of reintegration support, which comes to more than 172 thousand people. It appears that the provision is generally used slightly more often by younger people, for men, and for people who have not been on welfare for so long. It has not been investigated whether the outflow from the assistance also quickly lost their jobs or if they are still in employment.
