Women who are expecting multiple births should be entitled to an early maternity leave, of at least four weeks, says an MP.

On 13 October, Pieter Heermabrug, MP for Christen Democratisch Appèl’s (CDA) initiated the discussion with Minister of Social Affairs, Lodewijk Asscher about extending maternity leave, reported NU.nl.

According to Heermabrug, women who are expecting twins or triplets rarely go on leave on the 34th week of pregnancy, which is common. Often, they quit on doctor's advice before the 30th week. Heermabrug suggested that the maternity leave for these women should officially start in the 30th week.

Steven van Weyenberg, MP for D66 stated that women can use their maternity leave on a more flexible basis. Currently, women are entitled to 10 consecutive weeks of leave after childbirth. He suggested limiting the fixed period of up to six weeks while the remaining four weeks may be spread over a period of thirty weeks.

Minister Asscher is currently proposing a bill that regulates extending or broadening the scope of different sorts of leave so that work and caring for children can be integrated in a better way. For example, employees will be able to take leave in order to take care for a sick friend or not a relative. Currently, an employee may take care-leave only in the case of an ill partner, parent or child.

The Minister also suggested that in case a mother dies at the birth of a child, the father can be entitled to the maternity leave instead.
