Lack of Good Chefs in the Netherlands!

There is a huge shortage of good chefs in the Netherlands and this problem will only increase in the coming years, warns hospitality educator SVH (Competence Foundation for Hospitality). The reason is that the Dutch people are eating out more often nowadays.
Annually, the Chef training courses receive enough applicants, however, many students do not complete the training. “It seems a romantic job. But it is brutally hard work with irregular hours”, said SVH Master Chef Theo van Rensch.

UWV (Public Employment Service) noticed that in different parts of the country, there is a great demand for self-employed cooks. However, not only restaurant owners have a shortage of chefs; also in the rest of the hospitality industry, good people are needed. In more than two years, the number of vacancies increased in the hospitality industry by 70% to 11,500 jobs. And meanwhile, the number of restaurants continues to grow.

To prevent restaurants from closing, a shake up is needed in the catering branch, says SVH. “Working hours need to be normalised and salaries need to improve.” They claim that local hospitality industry can contribute to increasing labour supply. For example, through cooperation with educational institutions to provide work and training places.
